Default Speedometer Works Intermittently

Hi,

Is anyone familiar with the speedometer / speed control system in an '83 FCSB? The speedometer hardly ever displays a speed, but occasionally begins to work (temporarily) for no rhyme or reason.

The mechanic believes the Pick-Up Coil needs to be replaced. It is located just behind the transmission next to the drive shaft and reads magnetic plates on the shaft.

The mechanic called the manufacturer (DANA) and they no longer make the part (part# 250-6000). Anyone know where I can get a replacement?

If the entire system needs to be replaced, any suggestions as to who to go with?

Once again, thanks for all your help. I tried to upload a photo of the Coil, but the upload failed....is there a file size limitation? The file size was 3.8megs.

Thanks,
Ken Deneau

Dang! Thanks Woody, I'll tell the mechanic tomorrow. Any reason you can think of that would affect the speedometer in this way (doesn't work more than it works!).
Thanks.

Like Woody said that pickup at the tranny output shaft is the Cruise Control Pick Up. Several items could be causing the speed o problems. Bad ground, bad sensor, broken wire etc, etc.

Those issues could wind up costing a large pile of money to track down and get the speedometer working. A GPS will give you MPH and where you are, plus where your going.

Ken:
What your mechanic is looking at is the cruise control part.
The speedometer is driven from a sensor at the passengers rear wheel (I believe, could be the drivers rear wheel). The brake drum has notches in it, and I know when I took the rear wheels off and cleaned them, my speedo was working correctly.
Could be something simple.
