Default A Broken Tooth

Yes I know I see them everyday but this one's different. It's on MY BUS

I've had a tapping sound that one might think was a flat spot on a tire which goes away almost entirely when you take your foot off the "gas".

Shane, Thomas and Barry Grim road in and drove my coach over the weekend and made the tentative diagnosis of a broken tooth on the ring gear.

That's been verified today. NOW question. Just replace parts or do the entire rear end or wait to see what things look like when a part?

This is not one I will attempt obviously so I am also looking for a shop in the Shippensburg area to do the job.

Shane will direct me I am sure.

Mostly posted so you fellows who might hear the same sound could have a heads up. I can't get over how that one missing tooth would make enough enough trouble to transmit that sound into the coach. But the boys felt pretty certain that was the trouble and it has proven to be so.

Looks like the old girl needs some denture work.

Thanks Bill. Re-read that whole thread. Definitely not a job I'll undertake. Shane will be able to direct to a good repair shop I am sure.

John, glad you found the trouble, prior to failure.

Changing the ring and pinion is a 'routine' job for many heavy shops. I would change out the entire 3rd member (hogshead) with a reman or reconditioned unit in lieu of doing a field overhaul.

Get the replacement sourced and shipped and the task will be completed in a day or there abouts.

Make sure your shop installs the desired ratio.

It's not good news but could be worse for sure.

Shane will direct me as to who, how and what I am certain.

It's been making that noise for some time so I am not concerned about driving it for short trips but I won't be taking it out of state until fixed.

I did have it stuck on the grass right after I got the bus and that may have been when this happened. That was 35k miles back so maybe I've been living on borrowed time.

I'll get'er done. Thanks all.

Well, that's what we guessed. I would favor replacing the big chunk of stuff in its entirety. There are bearings, races, gears and pins that all make for a complicated sausage factory in there and I, for one, would not want to have to go through it again. I seem to recall that a newly rebuilt, warrantied unit was available here- http://www.cohentruckparts.com/ We'll need to get the ID off the tag on the pumpkin and go get one from them. They are located in the Downingtown area near Phila. Call Paul's Garage in York Springs (717) 528-4132 and see if Ed can handle a job like that. If not, Elite Coach in Ephrata did mine- but don't tell them you know me!

John, not a job I would want to do again. I got a rebuilt, guaranteed third member from Camerota for less than $1200.00. The labor was free. Just took me three weeks and endless telephone help from many WOG members. Good luck. I am with Shane. Buy the whole chunk rather than getting the gears replaced. Great time to replace wheel bearings and seals, too. That way you get the entire axle tube cleaned and inspected for metal chunks and pieces. Good luck.
