Default ZF transmission

Dave swan has asked me to help him resolve his old problem of not being able to start his coach and has overnight mailed a copy of his master wiring diagram for the coach. His same old problem is that when he pushes the neutral buttom on the ZF shift selector it does not light and he still cannot start the coach.
I have traced the circuits on the master chassis wiring diagram but have not got enough data on it to resolve the problem. I need the scematic that shows the wiring from the shift selector to the Neutral Safety Relay mounted in the ZF transmission. I believe that is where the problem is.

Dave is going to pull his ignition switch today and see if he has voltage at the middle terminal when he tries to start the engine. If he does then we have narrowed down the problem. The red wire from the middle terminal of the ignition switch goes thru the cannon plug pin 16 (under the lower dash) to the Neutral Safety Relay and then to the starter solenoid. The Neutral Safety Relay has to be triggered by something to activate it.

Does anyone have a schematic of those circuits, from the shift selector to the Neutral Saftey Relay? Or can trace that circuit so we can fix the problem and resolve Daves problem?

Tom & Dave,

Dave has had this intermittent issue for a few years, most times it finally starts, then it is difficult to troubleshoot. Several mechanics have looked at the problem and several wires have been jumpered across the Canon plugs.
I do not know what has been rewired on this Bus, But by phone we have been able to jumper 12 V to the ignition circuit and get Dave rolling temporarily.

Yesterday I mailed a drawing to Dave , it covers the canon plugs, ignition key circuit and the 8 relays that manage the 12 volt power to the ZF, & for temp gage, retarder, cruise, stop lights, etc.
It looks like the red ignition wire goes thru pin 10 on a plug, hopefully this has been jumpered or should be jumped to eliminate this connection as the problem , There are also a few rectangular nylon/plastic connectors, that need to be checked, that lead to the bank of 8 relays that are located in an aluminum box behind the headlight access panel. A few things need to be determined: Is the ZF ECM getting 12 volts, & is the neutral button getting power and is the light turned "ON."

I do not have the ZF ECM nor its connector drawing , But 12 V needs to be present on the RED wires that also appear to look Pink in color, on the ECM module. Dave will soon have the drawing that illustrates the installation of a separate Bosh relay to achieve this full 12 volts at the ECM.
IF this Bird is finally dead and not intermittent, maybe it can be finally repaired.

I'm interested to see what comes out of this thread. I have the same three problems with my coach - 'needed the relay mod from the bulletin, that gave more voltage to the red wire of the trans.,; won't start now from the ignition key, we rigged a solenoid-jumping wire up thru the bed, which temporarily is starting the coach, and, ; cruise control will up-idle but not cruise. ! Not sure what the next step is toward troubleshooting the ignition problem, and 'have no idea where to start on the cruise. ?? any help is appreciated.

I am watching and learning too.
I know very little about the ZFs,and I guess that puts me in good company if nothing else.
Keep us all advised.

i do know when we did the conversion

there is 1 wire that has to be grounded or the starter will not work

mine is running today with this grounded....I think that it might need to go to open to make cruise work ..this is in the zf relay box....will try and work on it today if i have time

Hold up I will send the relay box drawing.
the cruise needs a signal from the ZF relays ,
to engage or drop out when using the retarder.
