Default Asheville to Knoxville

How is I40 from Asheville to Knoxville? Is this a tough climb in this heat?

No. The mountains are 10 to 15 degrees cooler than the Tennessee valley. The speed limit is 50 mph and no passing for trucks which helps keep them in line. It's a great drive with gentle climbs and turns, some turns are tight, but easily negotiable if you keep the speed down. There's a couple tunnels but they're well lighted with plenty of room. Slow down in the tunnels and try to stay to the outside lane so you can sight around the turns. Turns in the tunnels can be tight and somewhat blind if you're in the inside lane and going too fast. Always be on the lookout for falling rocks! Lots of retaining fences have been built, but you never know... Landslides are common.

I've been through there several times. It isn't that bad even in this heat. Just went through there last month. The construction that was going on last year for a bridge is done, so that problem is gone for you.

thanks for the reply. I've been on I40 from TYS to AVL years ago. I remember it was a beautiful drive but was thinking it was a pretty steep going south.

David, We have stayed at Rutledge campground near the Airport before. It is clean and well serviced. Any others in AVL that you have checked out

Hi Kip,

Rutledge is nice. I've also heard great things about Campfire Lodgings; although, I've never been. I hear you need to make reservations well in advance and that the premium pads are worth the price: http://www.campfirelodgings.com/

Hey Kip, It is a nice scenic ride, you will have some great views, plenty of curves, some lane & speed restrictions. There are a few slow lanes and turnouts and a couple of nice rest stops along the way. Don't let the big rigs intimidate you when you're in the left lane as you should be "trucker lane" the trucks may want to pass you on the right becasue they are not obeying the speed limit when you are. Take it slower and enjoy the view.

David,
You are so right about Campfire Lodgings in Ashville! We stayed there last month and were really impressed. It is a little bit of a challenge to get up to it with our big rigs but it is worth it. Don't know that I would try it pulling a trailer behind the coach but the toad was ok. It had to be one of the best campsites I have ever been at. I think I posted about it after our trip but didn't put any photos in it. I'm sure we were lucky too. There were several people there with kids and you never knew they were around. Here are some pics.
