Default Wanderlodge serial (VIN) Numbers

the largest ones the 84 has all kinds of gauges on the upper dash, the 83 does not.
check your name plate in the rear engine access- that will tell you the year, etc

The 10th character of the VIN should be the year code:
C = 1982
D = 1983
E = 1984

John, from my understanding the 17 digit VIN was not in use in 82, 83 or 84. My PT40 has a five digit chassis (VIN) number.

Does any one have a list of chassis numbers for the first PT40's.

Perhaps other PT40 owners could post their chassis numbers here or PM them to Curt Sprenger and the BB database'.

The PO told me that while CA had titled it as a 1983 he was told it was an 84 but it would seem that perhaps it is really an 82 ?? Chassis numbers would help pin this down.

Hi Harry,

I’m not sure where you got that information. I'm pretty sure the 17-digit VIN was mandatory starting in early 1981. Most of the 1981 Birds don’t have a 17-digit VIN because they were built in 1980 but those few 1981’s that were built after January 1981 should have a 17-digit VIN.

All 1982’s, 1983’s, etc should have a 17-digit VIN.

Did you look above the windshield on the driver’s side for the VIN number?

What is that 5 digit number you’re talking about on your Bird? If it's just the Chassis Number, I can't do anything with it but if you can find the Body Number (on the plate just inside the engine hatch) near the rear bumber, it might help.

I can’t make any promises but I might be able to find your VIN using the body number.

Note: The Body Number should be something like this: F56856

Harry....I have a real, honest-to-goodness 1983 PT40 and the body number is F61271, the chassis serial number is 21143 and the 10th character of the VIN is "D".

Like Ernie said, I do not have those cool gauges above the windshield. I do have gauge envy.

There are other ways to tell the difference, in 83 the speedo and tach were in the center of the dash....in 84 they moved to the corners. Also, I believe that the water/power utility box was lowered in 84...mine's up high and I can see why they lowered it! It's harder than heck to get leverage on that plug when it's about head high.

Also, I believe (but can't confirm) that 83 PT's were only offered in one paint scheme....in 84 they offered several different ones. Mine is the dark brown metallic and gold metallic over a cream base.

The original invoice dated 7/18/83 makes no mention of the selected color...but it does specify option 5871 the "Copper Penny Interior Decor".

Hope this helps.

Mike

Default Wanderlodge serial (VIN) Numbers

This thread started out in the PT WB section as 83 PT40 List of solenoids with a question about my 83 PT40 and solenoids. It quickly morphed into a discussion of Chassis serial numbers and VIN numbers.

I was involved in studio transportation back then and I seem to remember that there were various exemptions, later ended, for heavy/special equipment, vehicles i n excess of 10,000lbs and commercial vehicles among others. It's not inconceivable that Bluebird would have fallen into one of those exemptions.

No, but I will look there next time I'm on board.

That 5 digit number comes from the "Service Parts Sheet" in the Blue Manual and it is noted as the "Chassis No". There is also a "Chassis Service No", one letter and six digits and the "Body No" which has no letter in front of the five digits which are 57590.

Would be grateful for any information you may be able to get

Cheers

Hi Harry,

I can’t say for sure that Wanderlodge was required to start putting 17 character VIN’s on in early 1981 but I can tell you for sure that they did. Keep in mind that by March of 1981 the 1982 models were being shipped so while only a few 1981’s appear to have 17 character VIN’s, all 1982 and later coaches should have them.

Unfortunately I was unable to find the VIN for your coach from the Body Number you posted. However, I did find a little information that may be of interest to you so I’ll send you a Private Message about that.

The bottom line is that your coach should have left the factory with a 17 character VIN so hopefully you’ll find it above the windshield.

The title for my 1980 has a 17 digit VIN (copied from the prior Michigan title) The vin plate above the windshield has only the five digit VIN. When I first registered it in AZ the DMV inspectors said the last five digits were all that were needed.
As can be seen in the attached pics (a little hard to read on the vin plate) this five digit number is the same as the Body number without the prefix F.

Not true. The 10th digit in my 1990's VIN is 'L'.
