Ryan,
The regulator you suggested is the first one we put in, didn't work.

We tried another regulator and we still get over 300 volts, can't adjust it down. The regulator supplier is going to consult with the factory to see what we can do from here.

I drove over to Shanes and picked up his old/new brushes and holder. Mine was distorted and cracking.

Gardner,

What is the model number of you generator set. Ours is a "Power Boost" (Yanmar powered) Model 12.5CC067. I have a Operation & Installation Manual for the Yanmar powered. and the service manual that covers both Yanmar & Perkins powered models.
Included are wiring diagrams for Bluebird Specs with & without accessory plug (Amp connector?). Let me know is any of this info would be helpful. I sent John the Yanmar engine service manual on cd which he has included in the forums database files.

Problem diagnosed

shorted rotor

Lynn at the shop tested for a short early on and it didn't show. After discussion with the regulator guy and subsequent information from the Kohler people, they said the behavior we are seeing with the regulator(high voltage) suggests a shorted rotor. So we tested again. Since we now had wires directly to the brush leads we tested between them and the chassis ground, it showed a short of 60 ohms. Previously he had tested tfrom the slip ring to the shafe end. Today he found that there was something on the rotor shaft that prevented the test lead from making contact, because today he cleaned it off with a wire brush and we get 60 ohms between the slip rings and the shaft.

So I have taken all the connections off and we will pull the draw out tonight. Lynn will take the rotor to the motor shop hand have it re-wound.
It's Laborr Say weekend, so I don't expect to hear anything till wednesday or Thursday. I guess it is also a good time to do the gaskets in the perkins??? But I will be back home this weekend and come back down next week.

It is a 3 hour drive, I have been staying in the coach using my little Honda 2000i to keep the batteries up. However, no AC, and it has been HOT.

Oh well, I can insulate the generator bay while I am waiting

Our first destination when we planned to leave in July was Oshkosh, now it is beginning to look like RATS

GREAT

The puzzle is solved, now it is just a few more bucks,
looks like you will have nothing to do, in the repair department, during the first few years of retirement.

Now Bill, you know better than that

Lynn will take the gennie apart on Monday, yea, he will be working Monday. Tuesday he will take the rotor to the rewinder. He does a lot of business wiht them and he believes he will have it back Wednesday or possibly Thursday. So then it is just put it together and slide the draw back in. Here are a couple of gennie draw removal pics. Notice the 'pit' like parking.

Woody,
Yes, Lynn is a 'can do' guy. He sticks to the job till it is fixed. He has other emergency jobs to do, so I don't ask him to work exclusively on my problem. I am not an emergency, just hopeing to get on the road soon.

He deducted some hours as he feels he should have found the problem sooner. I told him that I have been working along with him and don't see this as a failure on his part, we both failed to see the problem.

Here is a neat tractor Lynn has in his shop. His father completely restored it. It is really nice
