Using Abbreviations In Your Posted Messages And What They Mean
Acronyms, initialisms, and alphabetisms are abbreviations that are formed using the initial components in a phrase or name. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acronym_and_initialism Am I the only one that seems to be noticing the use of more acronyms, or abbreviations in the messages being posted on the forum lately. It seems that the upsurge of Blackberries and other types of new style cel phones that are being promoted and their use in text messaging, has increased the use of text message type acronyms used to describe our problems and solutions. There are people out there that have to have the very latest in gadgets and technology to make either their life easier, or they really need them for their work and then there are those, like a good friend of mine that........GASP! ![]() When posting a new thread, or a reply keep in mind that maybe there is a newcomer that could use this information to help them out either now, or when someone does a search on the topic in the future and how we compose our Questions and Solutions has a great impact in how it is understood by all of the forum members. Are we in that much of a hurry that we can't take the time to type out the whole word, or at least explain what the acronym stands for in our first post in a given thread, then a person can understand what we are talking about? Maybe we are used to using them in our jobs, or our hobbies, but does that mean that everybody on the forum will understand what we are talking about and if they don't, some people will just not ask about them and maybe they are the ones with the solution to our problem, but they don't totally understand what we are talking about. This isn't completely new, 26 years ago I used to get Honey Do notes left by my last wife who was a nurse, sometimes using medical acronyms, but that gave me an excuse of "But HONEY, I didn't understand what you meant" for not completing the task, but that didn't always work either ![]() I know that with all of the text messaging that is going on now days, it is OK to use abbreviations, or just letters for complete words, I would suggest that when you are posting a message on the forum, that there are some of us OLD DOGS that have enough of a problem just getting to and reading the forum, that when there are abbreviations used it makes it even harder to understand what you are talking about, especially for the newbies that don't necessarily understand the LINGO that we use. Keep in mind this will not help when it comes to reading Randy's posted messages, that will take a whole new topic to cover that subject ![]() So the next time you want to enter a acronym in your post on the forum, think back to when you didn't understand what you are about to type meant, it can make understanding a problem or a solution easier for someone else. I'm also suggesting that as a reply to this message, please list some of the abbreviations that you use, or if you have a question about an abbreviation that you have seen used on the forum ask about it here. Once it shows up as a reply to this message. I will add it to the list below and then in order to keep this particular message at the top of this thread, after we update the list with your additional abbreviation of a term, we will delete your original message, so that when a person comes here to find an abbreviated term they won't have to scroll up or down the page to find the list.
